TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An advocacy coalition for violence against minorities condemned the arrest of hundreds of visitors and staff of Atlantis Gym and Sauna under the suspicion of gay prostitution.

“The arrest is a bad precedent for minorities, gender groups, and other sexual orientation groups,” public attorney with the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute Pratiwi Febry said in a press release on Monday, May 22, 2017.

According to Pratiwi, the police arrested them under the suspicion of practicing gay prostitution which she argues is not banned under any form of policy or regulation.

“The victims were raided, arrested, stripped naked and carried on a public transportation to the North Jakarta Police Precinct,” Pratiwi explained.

Pratiwi further revealed that the victims were wrongfully treated once they arrived at the police precinct. Despite being accompanied by attorneys, police continued to take pictures of the naked victims that went viral not long after the incident took place.

“[Police] has committed an immoral and degrading act against these victims,” Pratiwi continued.

Pratiwi views that the arrests were made in a private domain, which could potentially be made as an example for other acts of violence in public. The coalition demanded police not to spread the identities, images, and other private information, considering that it could endanger the victims’ livelihood. (Friski Riana)
