Jakarta. A legal aid group will gather international support to demand that law enforcers halt the “criminalization” of 26 people who were arrested after a labor protest in Jakarta last year, the group’s leader said on Wednesday (17/02).

Police investigators have handed over the case dossiers of the 26 suspects – 23 workers, a student and two Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH) lawyers – to state prosecutors.

In response to this, the LBH will gather support from international lawyers’ organizations, LBH director Alghifarri Aqsa said.

“We will urge law enforcers to put an end to this case,” Alghifarri said. “It is not only a Jakarta case, but also an international case.”

The LBH reported police to the Indonesian Ombudsman last week for “maladministration” and called on the body to issue a recommendation over the police’s actions.

Police dispersed the mass rallies in front of the State Palace in late October last year when workers protested against the government’s new wage formula. Officers are accused of having “violently assaulted” the 26 people, who have since been arrested and named suspects for “defying the ruler.
